What Our Backyard Chickens Taught Us

When we first brought home our backyard chickens, I thought they would simply provide fresh eggs for our family.
At the time, my plan was simple: collect eggs each morning, enjoy fresh breakfasts, and maybe share a few extras with friends and family.
What I didn’t expect was how much these little birds would change the way I thought about food, gardening, and everyday life.
Looking back, our chickens have taught me far more than I ever imagined.
Lesson 1: Fresh Eggs Led Me Back to the Kitchen
One of the first things I noticed after getting chickens was how much I appreciated having fresh eggs available every day.
At first, I thought we would simply eat more scrambled eggs and omelets. But something unexpected happened. The eggs made me more curious about the food I was bringing into our home.
I started trying new recipes, baking more from scratch, and paying closer attention to ingredients. There was something incredibly satisfying about collecting eggs from our backyard and turning them into a meal for my family.

One of the greatest joys of raising chickens has been watching our children learn where their food comes from and become excited
Even now, they will eagerly run outside to collect a “fresh egg” from the coop rather than use the eggs sitting on the kitchen counter from the day before. In their minds, those eggs are no longer fresh enough!
It always makes me smile because they’re right—there’s nothing quite like gathering an egg and bringing it straight from the nesting box to the breakfast table.
Those simple moments taught us that fresh eggs were more than breakfast. They became a reminder of where our food comes from and how rewarding it can be to produce even small portion of our family's food ourselves.
Lesson 2: Everything Is Connected
One of the things I love most about homesteading is seeing how everything works together.
The chickens enjoy kitchen scraps and garden leftovers. Their bedding and manure eventually become compost. That compost helps feed the garden. The garden then produces food for both our family and our chickens.
Before raising chickens, I understood the idea of composting and sustainability. But seeing it happen right in our own backyard gave me a whole new appreciation for how everything is connected.

Seeing that connection firsthand made me realize how little has to go to waste when nature is allowed to do what it was designed to do.
The chickens have become an important part of that cycle and a daily reminder that simple living often starts with making better use of what we already have.
Lesson 3: Chickens Made Me a Better Gardener
I never expected chickens to have such a significant impact on the way I garden.
Over the years, I’ve learned how valuable their chicken manure and compost can be for building healthy soil. I’ve also learned to pay closer attention to the relationship between animals, plants, and the overall health of our backyard ecosystem.
The more time I spend gardening, the more I realize that healthy gardens aren’t built overnight. They are built through small daily habits, patience, and working alongside nature rather than against it.
Our chickens have become an important part of that process. What began as a desire for fresh eggs slowly turned into a deeper understanding of how connected our garden, kitchen, and chickens really are.
More Than Fresh Eggs
If you ask me today what chickens have brought to our lives, fresh eggs would only be part of the answer.
They’ve taught our family where food comes from. They’ve connected us more deeply to our garden. They’ve encouraged us to waste less, cook more, and appreciate the simple rhythms of everyday life.
What started as a small flock of backyard chickens became something much bigger.
Much like the garlic growing quietly in the garden or the gathering basket waiting by the back door for harvests, they became a simple part of daily life that ended up teaching us lessons we never expected.

In many ways, the greatest lesson they taught us is that simple living isn’t about doing more—it’s about paying attention to the things that matter most. A few chickens in the backyard reminded us to slow down, care for what we have, and find joy in everyday routines.
The eggs are wonderful, but the perspective has been even more valuable.
Sometimes the smallest additions to a homestead leave the biggest impact, and our chickens are a daily reminder that a simpler life often begins with one small step and a willingness to learn along the way.
